Cotton production prospects decline in CFA due to pest infestation

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a global agricultural production report showing that cotton production in the CFA franc zone for 2022/23 is expected to be 5.4 million bales, down 100,000 bales or 2% from last month, down 600,000 bales or 9% from the previous year’s record production and down 1% from the 5-year average.

Cotton harvested area is expected to be 3.1 million hectares, down 78,000 hectares or 2% from last month, but up 12,000 hectares from last year. Yield is expected to be 378 kilograms per hectare, almost unchanged from last month and down 8 percent from the 5-year average. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Overseas Agricultural Service office in Dakar said the decrease in cotton area in Mali was due to crop damage caused by flooding and bollworm.
