How To Stake Raspberry Bushes

Staking raspberry bushes is a common practice to provide support for the canes, especially when they become heavy with fruit. Staking helps prevent the canes from bending, breaking, or touching the ground, which can lead to disease or pest problems. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to stake raspberry bushes:

  1. Choose the right stakes: Select sturdy and durable stakes that are taller than the raspberry canes. Wooden or metal stakes are commonly used. The stakes should be approximately 6 to 8 feet long and about 1 to 2 inches in diameter.
  2. Determine the spacing: Raspberry bushes should be spaced about 2 to 3 feet apart in a row. You’ll need a stake for every 3 to 4 plants. Measure and mark the spots where you’ll drive the stakes into the ground.
  3. Dig holes for the stakes: Use a shovel or a post hole digger to create holes at the marked spots. The holes should be deep enough to securely hold the stakes, usually around 1 to 2 feet deep.
  4. Place the stakes: Insert one stake into each hole, making sure they are centered and straight. Tamp down the soil around the base of each stake to provide stability.
  5. Attach support wires: Run two or three strong wires horizontally between the stakes. The first wire should be positioned about 18 inches above the ground, and subsequent wires should be spaced approximately 18 inches apart. You can use galvanized wire or other sturdy materials.
  6. Tie the canes to the wires: As the raspberry canes grow, gently tie them to the support wires using soft plant ties, twine, or strips of cloth. Avoid tying the canes too tightly to allow for some flexibility and growth.
  7. Prune and train the canes: Regularly prune your raspberry bushes to maintain a manageable size and encourage proper growth. Remove any weak or damaged canes, as well as any suckers that emerge from the ground. Train the remaining canes to grow vertically along the support wires.
  8. Monitor and adjust: Keep an eye on the raspberry canes throughout the growing season. Periodically check the ties and adjust them as necessary to prevent constricting the canes. Make sure the canes have enough room to grow and receive adequate sunlight and airflow.

By staking your raspberry bushes, you’ll help ensure healthier plants, easier harvesting, and improved overall fruit production.
