India’s rice sowing area decreases year-on-year

As of Sept. 2, India, the world’s second-largest rice grower, had planted 38.4 million hectares of rice, down 5.6 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the Indian Ministry of Agriculture. By comparison, the area of rice sown in the week ending Aug. 18 was 8.25 percent behind the same period a year earlier. Monsoon rainfall was 6% above average through Sept. 2, according to the India Meteorological Department.
