The food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations suggests that quinoa should be used as the main food supplement in China

“In recent years, global climate change has seriously affected agricultural production,” the food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations said at the quinoa Industry Development Forum in Qinghai on July 7. China has about 135 million hectares of arable land, of which 7% is affected by salinization, which is equivalent to using 7% of arable land to feed 22% of the Chinese people. How to strive for more land outside the red line to grow food is crucial to China’s food security. Therefore, it is urgent to promote alkali tolerant varieties like quinoa and provide effective intervention. We advocate that quinoa should be used as a staple food to supplement China’s staple food. ”

Quinoa is the only plant food that contains all the amino acids needed by human body. It is also rich in high-quality protein and a variety of trace elements. It is known as “full nutrition food”. After nearly 10 years of development in Qinghai, the planting area of quinoa in Qinghai has been expanded year by year, and the benefit has been steadily improved. The highest yield per mu is more than 450 kg, which is higher than that of the origin and other regions of China. It has effectively led the local farmers to increase their income.

According to reports, from the perspective of China’s rural and urban consumption structure, the demand for staple food in urban areas shows a slow downward trend, and the demand in rural areas is significantly higher than that in urban areas. If we can introduce quinoa as the main food in rural areas and increase quinoa consumption, it will significantly increase the national nutritional status, improve food security and change the food consumption structure.
