Vietnam’s agricultural exports must adapt to the new EU standards

The European Commission said that the provisions on temporary official control and emergency measures for some foods entering the EU would be revised.

Therefore, since November 23, 2021, the detection frequency of pesticide residues in some vegetables, spices and pitaya in Vietnam has been increased to 50% and 10% respectively. At the same time, in order to ensure food safety, the European Commission will regularly review the list of non animal derived food and feed from several third countries and subject to official inspection at border control points every six months. In the background of novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, this leads to the extension of clearance time for agricultural products, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, which has an impact on the financial interests and product quality of enterprises.

Vietnamese food has been returned not only in the EU market, but also in the Chinese market due to unqualified quality inspection. According to statistics, in the first nine months of 2021, 138 batches of food were exported in violation of Chinese regulations. These violations have sounded an alarm for us. In the future, how to focus on ensuring that the quality of Vietnamese agricultural products can meet the standards of importing countries.

This is not only the recall or destruction of a certain batch of goods, but also the damage to the reputation of Vietnamese agricultural products and exporters, the decline in the export amount of agricultural products, and the adverse impact on the whole production chain and supply chain.

In response to this situation, the Vietnamese sanitary and phytosanitary notification agency and consultation point (SPS Vietnam) held online meetings in time to publicize the commitment of animal and phytosanitary inspection and quarantine in large export markets such as EU and China. The Trade Promotion Bureau of the Ministry of industry and trade of Vietnam held a series of consultation meetings on the export of agricultural products and food in each key market.

However, in order for Vietnamese agricultural products to fully and fully meet the standards of importing countries, especially the European Union, the United States and even China, Chinese enterprises must abide by relevant regulations in the process from raw material processing to product processing to ensure the quality of finished products. Among them, efforts need to be made to implement the sustainable development agricultural projects practiced in many countries as soon as possible, such as reducing the consumption of chemical pesticides, reducing nutrient loss, reducing the consumption of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, reducing the sales of antibiotics for animal husbandry, increasing the area of organic agriculture, etc.
