Penja pepper in Cameroon has obtained the certification of European Union geographical indication protection products

The European Commission recently decided to list Cameroon penja pepper as a protected geographical indication product, the website of “investment in Cameroon” reported on March 18. This decision is conducive to further improving the market value of penja pepper, especially in the European market. Previously, the African Intellectual Property Organization had listed the pepper as a protected geographical indication product in 2013, and then its price and output increased sharply. The unit price per kilogram increased from 2500 CFA francs (about US $4.3) in September 2013 to 14000 CFA francs (about US $24.0) in 2015. The output tripled to 300 tons in the same period.

Penja pepper is a tropical pepper, which is famous for its unique quality and taste. It is one of the most popular peppers in cooking all over the world. The pepper is produced on the slope of Koup é volcano in penja Town, coastal region of Khartoum, and the planting history can be traced back to the 1950s.
