Sri Lanka’s Cabinet approves tax exemption for paddy purchase and rice production and sales

Sri Lanka’s Ada Derana reported on February 28 that the Sri Lankan cabinet has agreed to amend the social security levy to exempt the purchase of paddy and the production and sale of rice from the tax. The government said the exemption from the tax is expected to maintain the maximum retail price per kilogram of rice at the current level, while the price of a kilogram of rice purchased from farmers will be more than 100 rupees. Meanwhile, the cabinet also approved the provision of free rice to low-income families.
