Ukrainian farmers may increase oilseed sowing in 2023

The total area sown to oilseeds in Ukraine in 2023 will increase by 5% year-on-year and production is expected to rise by 1% year-on-year, according to Svetlana Kupreva, an analyst at consulting firm UkrAgroConsult.

Sunflower seed sowing area in 2023 is likely to increase by 10% compared to the previous year. With Ukraine exporting edible oil through the “grain corridor”, sunflower oil exports are quite active, and the continued operation of crushing plants in the central and southern regions of Ukraine will drive the expansion of sunflower seed plantings. Sunflower seeds are one of the most profitable crops to grow. Since 2018, more than 6.5 million hectares of sunflower seeds have been sown in Ukraine.

Western Ukraine is usually the main soybean producing region, which is far from the Russian-Ukrainian conflict zone. soybean area in the western region increased by 10% in 2022, a trend that will continue in 2023. The soybean crushing industry is located in a safer part of Ukraine. UkrAgroConsult expects soybean crushing volumes to increase, and high European demand for soybeans, soybean oil and soybean meal will also help drive soybean acreage growth in Ukraine.
